Me, myself, and I-ntuition

In a modern, frenetically paced world, we seem to be losing sight of one of our greatest allies: our intuition.

It is the small voice within, whose voice has the sole intention of keeping us safe and looking out for our well being. It aids us in discernment, in the character and integrity of our relationships, and the choices we make continually throughout our days and lives. We can disadvantage ourselves, indeed sabotage our success, by disregarding this tool we all carry.

Emotional health is tied into so many variables, and it seems almost impossible to establish any semblance of control over our immediate environments and the control they have over us. Our beliefs, and those of the people surrounding us, set the stage for productivity and peace within the workplace.

Maintaining a positive attitude will in turn stimulate our levels of accomplishment, whereas a negative attitude will impede us. Tuning into our intuition can provide us with valuable guidelines:  are we motivated to do what we truly believe in, or does the financial side of our choices direct them in the first place? Do you surround yourself with colleagues who share your values, and commitments, where there is a connection regarding thoughts on the well being of humanity and the planet?

With all the new literature out now on Emotional Intelligence, and more recently, Spiritual Intelligence (the book on which has just been published), people are becoming increasingly aware of the consequences of estrangement from their own spirits. A strong indicator of character and integrity is if an individual embraces a service-orientated approach to the world, and not one that is completely self-orientated.

The role of parents is so often problem-ridden by the challenges constantly to respond and “wing it”, where circumstances and situations arise all the time requiring good judgement and clear thinking. Instinct operates at top speed, but where there is often just a reaction to a given event, utilising intuition is invaluable, especially in crisis resolution. Stepping back from a situation, and giving oneself the opportunity to find the guiding stimulus within, is an imperative part of the process.

Our tendency is to live from the neck up, where we are conditioned to only use our intellect to solve problems and guide us. We disregard the fact that our bodies are complex and sensitive, sensors to alarm and pleasure. If we could listen with greater ease to what our bodies tell us, about someone we have just met, or interacted with, or a job or project coming up, we would find a series of signals to help us.

The old “gut feeling” is exactly that, where one can feel how the body either tightens or relaxes, where energy surges or breathing changes, or there is a feeling of inspiration and well being, or conversely a sense of dread and discomfort. Pay attention to your body’s response, to an individual, a business, a proposition – and trust it.

We are composed of not only flesh and blood, but also energy fields, and these energies emit from us in both subtle and very obvious ways. People, even businesses, give off these energies, and if you are open to them, you will have a better understanding in how to respond. It is impossible to feign the energy of love, and although many may claim all kinds of good intentions, if you are sensitive to this energy, you will be able to judge the truth.

Positive energy exudes, manifesting with the response of warmth, loving, expansiveness, inspiration – the sensation in one’s chest is a real indicator. Alternatively, negative energy creates sensations of draining, numbing cold, almost painful.

Our intuition generally gets drowned out by the strident voice of our intellect, and this is why there is such a demand these days for help in re-accessing our “inner voice”.   Meditation, prayer, contemplation, spending time in nature – these are all methods to hear what our bodies are trying to tell us.

Often we have a flash of intuition, a hunch or a sound, an image or a memory, and then we will find we suddenly have clarity where we sought an answer. These are signals our inner wisdom is sending us, and the more we tune into this frequency, the more often we will feel that accompanying sense of peace at doing the right thing.

Our dreams are a great source of intuitive thought, a language rich with images we are aware of consciously and subconsciously.  Of course, one of the problems with dreams, is that we so often cannot recall them the next day. It is worthwhile waking up sufficiently to make a quick note, and it is often a complete revelation to see how our minds deal with various issues while our bodies are ostensibly sleeping.

Honing our compassion, our ability to be discriminating and discerning, finding clarity and faith in our own ability to reach decisions – these are within reach, and where we turn to others to try to “hear” for us, and provide us with answers and directions, perhaps we need to look more towards “me, myself, and my intuition.”
