39. Befuddled besiegers

You, the commander of an army of bloodthirsty invaders, are laying siege to a castle. The castle is well defended: it stands on a square island with a deep moat ten metres wide running all the way around it. Your plan is to storm the island by laying plank bridges over the moat – but, frustratingly, the planks you’ve brought with you are only 9.5 metres long!

Using only this equipment, can you still get onto the island, and how? (No swimming allowed – you’re wearing full armour.)
