Q.

Severe overbite

I have a severe overbite, severe to the extent that my top teeth completely cover my bottom teeth and bite into my palet just behind my top teeth. I had braces fitted at the age of 11 and wore them for about 2 years so i assume that braces could not correct my problem. I am now 31 years old and experience almost constanct pain where my teeth bite into my palet. I have noticed over the past few years that it appears my top two front teeth are moving further and further apart (there is already a gap between the two of about 1/2cm) and also it looks as if the top teeth are moving forward. I realise that there is surgery recommended to correct this but i am advised that it is quite expensive and most medical aids will not cover it. As a last resort i thought i could have my teeth extracted and that would solve the problem but i was advised that i would then simply bite through any dentures that were fitted. I am desperate to find out what if anything can be done about this, where do i go to, who do i go to and will anybody be able to help me?

Hi Lisa
The problem can definitely be sorted out. The first step is to see a dentist then an orthodontist. Surgery MAY not be necessary.
