Q.

Pulling healthy teeth

My son''s orthodontist says it''s necessary to pull two of his teeth in order to get them straight. But in my heart I really don''t want to pull out healthy teeth. Is this a commonly done thing?

Hi Caroline

Thank you for contacting us with your concern. It is always disconcerting when you are advised to extract teeth, especially if it is your child's.

In orthodontic treatment, space is usually your biggest problem. It is very often needed to extract some teeth to create the necessary space. Although we try to prevent this as much as possible, it might be the only treatment option to get a stable long term result.

If you are very concerned about this, I'd advise you to get a second opinion to put your fears at ease.

I hope this helps

Regards
