kiddy tooth abscess?

Hi Dentist

My 6 yr old had two molars removed in March, she also had a 3rd one filled. Now in June, the one side of the face is swollen - I thought it was mumps but am now wondering if it is a tooth abscess? Can this be the case so many months after the procedure? I have asked her if her teeth and gums are sore and she just says her face is sore. I now am having to consider that the swollen salivary gland may not really be mumps after all. I took her to the doctor who said it might be mumps - but admits he is not sure.

Can a tooth abscess come many months after the tooth is removed and is there any dead giveaway for this condition, vs mumps? Is there something inside her mouth I can look for and know I have to now take her to the dentist, not back to the doctor?

The one side of her face is misshapen but depending on who is looking at her, this is mumps, which would come at around this age. But because I know she had two dental procedures on that side of the face a few months ago, the whole tooth abscess possibility is bugging me.

Apart from on-off pain and a clearly swollen gland, sort of between the front of the ear and middle of the cheek, she is fine. Re the two molars which received attention on that side of the face, the lower molar was removed altogether and the upper received a metal filling.

Your thoughts?

mumps will not cause swelling on 1 side of the face alone - it is most likely an abscess.
take her back to the dentist.
it is possible that the tooth that was filled is the one giving the abscess.
