Have to get wisdom teeth taken out?

Dear DentalDoc,

At the end of 2007 my dentist took x-rays and said I will have to get my wisdoms taken out, especially the bottom right one, which will be the first to give me problems. I don' t have medical aid and can' t afford to get it done myself, so he suggested Tygerberg Hospital. I know it might sound ridiculous, but I am very scared to get it done. I have never had any operations or anesthetics. I have 2 questions: (1) What would happen if I don' t get them taken out? (2) If I was to get it done at Tygerberg, can you please explain the whole procedure thoroughly to me so that I know exactly what I am in for?

Thanks Doc!

If you dont have your wisdom teeth removed, those teeth might decay especially the teeth are partly showing in your mouth.
If the teeth are sitting underneath the gum ,these teeth might push and exert pressure on your other teeth causing pain.

Depending on the type of impaction, the specialist would give you the option of either having the tooth extracted in the dental chair or going to theatre.
For general anaesthetic they put you out to sleep and the extractions get done while you are sleeping.
