Braces- am I having my time wasted?

Hi Doc,

I' m wondering if you can help me out. I had braces put on in November 2007, a couple of months before I turned 21. When I first had the consultation, the orthodantist told me I' d have the braces off before December 2008. The thing is, my back teeth are being very difficult. The orthodantist is trying to broaden my top jaw to fit in all my teeth and to get my bite corrected. Since about mid last year he' s been trying to do this- first he put a hook at the back of my 2nd last back tooth on the left side of my mouth. The elastic was supposed to go from the back of my tooth to the front of my bottom tooth. Most of the time I bit the elastic off in my sleep. So when that didn' t really work he put two things on my very back teeth and I didn' t have to wear elastics for that part of the treatment. However, the wires came out of the very back things of my back teeth. So I went back and he put new things on my back teeth and I had to wear normal elastics. But then on the one side the actual thing that goes on my tooth came off. So again, I had to go back. He put more hooks things that slid onto the braces on the sides of my teeth and I was supposed to wear tiny little elastics over 3 teeth. I just couldn' t- it hurt too much. So I went back today and I still have to wear the little elastics over 3 teeth.

The thing is, he told me if what he wants to do doesn' t work he' ll take the teeth out. I' ve had to go back a few times now to fix up the breakages and things (excluding the time I never wore the elastics)- how many more times will I have to go before he eventually takes the teeth out? In my whole treatment the pain has never been this bad- myprodols don' t even help. I also asked him to take out the hook (at the back of my tooth) they put on mid last year but he told me they' re going to use that- they haven' t used that hook in MONTHS and it scrapes against my tongue. When I asked him why can' t they just take the braces off he said because the way my bite is sitting, it will rub down the inside of my back teeth and my teeth with go scew again. Is he being a perfectionis, wasting my time and money or is he doing the right thing?

It sounds as though he is doing th right thing.
although he mentioned a time frame to you initially, it is VERY difficult to predict how treatment will progress as there are so many factors that play a part in the treatment.
Hang in there you will be fine
