Yet another question

Dear Doc

Thank you for answering yet another question. My 11 year old started coughing yesterday. He has all the typical cold symptoms like sneezing, runny nose etc...I am not to worried. However, he is asthmatic and his chest seems very tight and he has now developed a low grade fever. He is obviously using his cortisone pump and his reliever pump as perscribed - but his chest remains tight (not so much that I am worried about an immenant attack). I know antibiotics have no effect on viral infections such as a cold. What else can I give him to help him. He starts exams tomorrow!

Your son almost certainly has a viral infection of his chest. This affects the airways of his lungs and causes inflammation of his airways. If he is writing exams he needs to get better quickly. He should have a course of Prednisone 30mg once daily for 5 days. This is in addition to his usual medicines.
