Yellow eyes

Hi Doc,

My son is two weeks tomorro and i noticed that his eyes are yellowish on Tuesdayand i took him to a Doc today and he said i didn' t clean his belly botton properly(i have been cleaning it after every nappy change and bath with surgical spirit) he says i should open it up an clean there?? How does that affect his eyes to be yellowish? I asked about Jontis (sorry for spelling) and he says the eyes are not yeloow enough??? can' t he test if he has " jontis"  can just looking at them enough? Should i take him to another Doc? I am very worried.

Your baby definitely is jaundiced and you are correct. This is very common in newborn babies and the most common form of jaundice is known as physiological jaundidce. This form of jaundice tends to continue for longer in breast fed babies. It is unlikely that your baby has developed an infection from his umbilicus as you say you have been cleaning his umbilicus well. Your babys jaundice should disappear within another 10 days or so and if he is not very yellow there is no need to be concerned. If he becomes more yellow [more jaundiced in appearance] then please take him to be seen by a doctor.
