Wind / Cramp Medication

Hi - I have just visited my sister-in law in the Seychelles who has a 7 1/2 week old baby girl who was conceived by ICSI Frozen Embryo. We initially thought that she was suffering from Colic, however, have read on a popular american website for moms / babies that this is not the case as she does not cry for more than 3 hours at a time, for more than 3 days a week, and for more than 3 consecutive weeks. She is breast-fed and at times seems to pass wind / stools very easily and at other times seems to push her abdomen and struggle a bit before the wind passes and also cries. We have heard that it is not good to give babies any medication and to just let the wind pass ''naturally''. My sister-in-law has a very well-known Gripe Water (Alcohol &  Sugar Free) which she has not tried as yet as she has heard that it is not good for the baby. She also has Colic Relief (a Homeopathic Liquid made in Australia) that a friend gave her and that she tried in a dose of 0.5ml three times per day (1/2 hour either before or after breast-feeding) for a couple of days - the directions stated are 0.5ml every 4 hours (not more than 4 times in a day) for not more than 2 days without consulting a doctor. She has also tried a Seychelles ''natural / old wives'' remedy of boiling ''Baby Mint Leaves'' which is then strained and cooled and +- 20ml to 30ml given to the baby in a bottle twice or three times per day. I have also read that Cow''s Milk (Long-Life) should only be given to a baby after the age of 1 year as the protein molecules in the cow''s milk are too large for the baby''s kidneys to process. Would this also be the case if the Mom is drinking a lot of milk and eating a lot of cheese and yoghurt and it is being passed on to the baby through her breast milk? If so, should she completely cut it out of her diet as well as the baby''s (when she starts to give her solids) until she is a year old? Your advice on all of the above would really be appreciated - thank-you for your time.

It is difficult to be sure about your baby niece's problem but as she is being breastfed this does narrow down the possible causes a bit. It seems that this little baby does have colic which is very common in babies under 3 months. Her symptoms fit the pattern of a colicky baby very closely. She should be on an established colic remedy such as the Colic Relief from Australia or other well known brands. She should not try all of the other remedies which do not appear to be tried and tested in young babies.Your sister can continue to drink milk and eat dairy products as thes are essential to replace her calcium stores.
