why oh why

my daughter is almost 8 months old and suffers from constipation. She has only been breast fed thus far and her solids diet consists of only fruit and veg, mostly home cooked and occasionally Purity. She has milk feeds very often at night (between 2.5-3 hourly). I can' t understand why she is constipated as she drinks water and rooibos tea in - between. Please can you advise what amounts are necessary for her. I haven' t started cereal yet and am afraid to until she has normal bowel movements again over a sustained period of time. I also want to introduce formula but worried that this too will worsen the problem. What can I do to prevent her from getting constipated and to solve this issue? Is it possible that giving her too much of food will make her constipated?

It is unusual for a breastfed baby to be so constipated. In addition you are giving your baby fruit and vegetables and she drinks water.Part of the problem may be a lack of fibre especially as she is not having cereals. If there is no family history of allergies try giving her a wheat cereal. Stop giving her Rooibos and see if this helps. If there is no benefit from these simple measures,it would be best to ask your paediatrician to see your baby as this is most unusual in a breastfed baby.
