Why is he not sleeping?

My son is a year and 5 months old and never has he slept thru one nite. He wakes up more than 3 times during the nite. I have tried everything, food, meds, calming music, tummy rubs, calming bath oils...He just doesnt want to sleep. He is not overactive when playing and I`m not too stressed up when I am with him, so cant be my mood. We have even swopped his bed 3 times. What is a common thing that keeps babies awake? He doesnt sleep during the day. Frustrated and worried mom.

There are several reasons why a toddler of your son's age may be such a poor sleeper. Probably the most common is simply that this is the sleep pattern that he has developed. He seems to need very little sleep and does not sleep during the day. While this is often the sign of a very intelligent child it is very difficult for parents who also get little sleep as a result. Another common cause of this kind of restlessness is a reflux problem with stomach acid refluxing into the lower part of the oesophagus especially on lying down. This causes great discomfort for a child. The third important possibility is a blocked nose. Childen of this age simply cannot sleep when they have a blocked nose.To possibly eliminate one of these possible causes try giving your son Gaviscon liquid 5ml at night for a few nights just before he goes to bed.If this helps then reflux is the likely cause. If it does not you will need to ask your paediatrician to see him to make sure that there is nothing else obvious to explain his sleep problem.
