Q.

When is it time for the dr

Hi doc

My 8 year old son has been coughing and complaining of a sore throat for at least 10 days now. He is not coughing constantly. The cough is productive and his nose is congested (but not really runny - more just blocked). I am thinking that the cough is the result of the post nasal drip and the sore throat from the cough. He does not have a fever and is playing normally - his appetite is smaller than usual, but not gone.

I have not treated the symptoms apart from some throat spray (andolex c) last night and tonight his chest was tight, so he used my ventolin inhaler which helped a lot.

I have also been rinsing his sinuses with a salt water solution with a neti pot - but not often because he hates it and his nose is so congested it does not run through.

Do I treat him further at home and if so, what can you recommend or do you think he should now be seen by a dr.

Thank you

Your son almost certainly has had a viral infection of his upper airway and his chest. He does not have a fever so he is in the late stages of this illness and should get better by himself. You need to clear his nose more effectively and more often so use a Sterimar nasal spray at least twice a day. You can use the Ventolin inhaler two puffs twice daily and give him Mucospect twice a day as well to help him to clear the mucous from his chest and sinuses.
