when does toddlers start talking

Hi doc

From what age is a toddler suppose to start talking? My one is twenty months old and the only words he can say is mamma and dadda. But he understands whatever we tell him. Is this normal?

Your child should be saying more than 2 words by now,in fact he should be using 3 word sentences. Many children especially little boys are a bit slow to start talking so as long as he is a healthy child and can hear normally there is no need for concern. If he is not talking by 3 years he should be seen by a speech therapist. In the meantime try to encourage him to use words for things he wants and read to him at bedtime.
