Q.

When do I start worrying?

My boy is 16months old and is not talking - he says Baba, Daddy and only says mommy when he needs me. Other than that he points at things and babbles (alot!). He has reached all his other milestones, and his hearing is fine so I cant think its that. I am really worried about this! I was thinking it could be cos he is half day at my Mother In Law who speaks afr to him? I have asked her to know only speak english to him. Thanks!

This is very common and not due to your mom in law speaking Afrikaans to him. Many boys in particular are a bit slow with their language development. Give him a lot more time and if he is still not talking by 2 and a half years ask a speech therapist to see him.

I do not think you need to worry, My little one who is now 2 years also started chatting later than " usual" . He is learning 3 languages, Afrikaans, English and Portuguese. It is quite amaxing how much he understands and speaks in each language. it is very good for them to learn more than one language, yes they take time to start talking as you would want them to but when he starts he is going to amaze you. Stop stressing. and enjoy
