whats going on?

Hi Doc
Please could you help me, i have a six week old son who has been great up until monday. he has become restless, wont sleep much probably ten minutes max in the morning about an hour or two in the afternoon and at night its a complete nightmare. we have to hold him for him to fall asleep and when we are about to put him in his cot or on the bed he wakes up and cries, and during his sleep he moans and gets frights that will wake him up on some occassions. He seems to be hungry all the time as he sucks on his hands (I am breast feeding and giving formula-: twice a day) i have now started giving him the purity rooibos and chamomile tea. I have resorted to letting him sleep with me in the bed at night just so i can get some shut eye. when i breast feed him he tends to fall asleep after 5 or 10 mins of feeding and then he will wake up again screaming blue murder or while he is feeding he will pull away and cry (what am i doing wrong?). During the day i cannot move as he is either constantly crying and hungry. Why has this happened all of a sudden? do i need to put him on a fattier formula (he is on novalac) and how do i know if my breast milk is enough? he was such a content baby in a wonderful a predictable routine. What has happened. I did take medication for a vaginal infection i had which i took on saturday past, could that have affected him? Please help. Thank-you

It sounds as if your son has a reflux problem and that the acid reflux is causing him discomfort.Give him Gaviscon Liquid 2.5ml twice daily and see if he improves. If he does improve this means that he does have reflux and needs to be on more effective medicine. If he does not improve he should also be seen so that a diagnosis can be made of his problem. Do not give him any teas or other fluids at his age.
