weeks without food

hi doc, my 19month boy weighed 11.60kg at his 18month check up. since dec 2010 he goes for a week or two without any solids whatsoever every month. his diet when he eats consists of pap&  gravy, veggies, yoghurt, cereal, juice, water, viennas, cheese, fish fingers, fruit. he now has not eaten a thing for 5 days. he only has formula, even that he has little of(2x260ml at night, 1 in the morning and one in the afternoon). he spits out anything else i put in his mouth. he''s been to his paed twice this year but she does not do any tests or prescribe anything for this problem because she says his weight is fine. i''ve given him longifen for 3 days now and still he wont eat. im worried what side effects this could have for his development. is there any possible reason for this problem?

Your son's weight is well above the average weight for his age and he is in the top 25% for little boys of his age as far as his weight is concerned. Many children seem to eat less for a while at this age as they are over the very rapid growth period of the first year of life.Try giving him only very finely mashed or pureed food and see if he prefers to eat food which is not coarse in texture. It seems unnecessary to boost his appetite now as his weight is excellent. He will start eating when he is ready.
