You have done very well to have breast fed your baby up to 18 months. Stopping breastfeeding suddenly is actually somethjing that is more difficult for you than for your baby. You can start your baby on a sippy cup and tell him that you are going to stop the breastfeeding very soon. When you do stop you will be surprised how easily he will adjust to the new situation.

I stopped breastfeeding when my little girl was 11 months old. I told her two days before that mommys milk is drying up. And on the planned last feed I told her it is the last. I also started telling her two days before that when I have no more milk left she will have to drink milk from a sippy cup. So when the dreaded night came when I had to put her to bed without breastmilk  we went to sit at our usual spot. I told her - remember mommy has no more milk and you have to drink from your cup - and for the first time ever she drank milk from a cup. And went to bed happily.

She is now 2 years and is left with no scars. When possible she still sits on my lap for that last milkfeed before bedtime  otherwise daddy has to do.
Good luck. Its much harder for mommy than baby!
