Q.

Very gassy newborn - What to do.

Hi,
My little one is 1 week old and appears to have very painful gas buildup. He is drinking about 70ml of Similac Total Comfort every 3 to 4 hours and generally appears healthy and happy, except at night when he has lots of pain. He goes red in the face, pulls his legs up to his stomach and clenches his fists. He seems to get some relief every time he passes gas, but this has been going on for 2 to 3 hours per night for the last 3 nights.
I will be giving him some Probiflora paed probiotics from today, but I want to know whether there is anything else we could try, or whether there could be a specific cause to the issue?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Jean

It is unusual that your newborn baby only has symptoms at night. He is having symptoms that are typical of colic but he is a bit 'young' for this to occur. He probably has lactose intolerance if he is so windy.Try him on a lactose free formula such as NAN LF or S26 LF and see if he improves.
