underweight baby boy

hi doc, i''m now at my wits end.

my 9month old boy is 8kg. i took him for his immunisation today and was told that his weight is a concern. unfortunately, the nurses didnt have any kind of advise about how to correct this.

my son used to throw up after almost every feed, all that he kept down was his formula. now, he rarely throws up and i think he''s getting enough food. he gets maltabella porridge around 8, then jarred purity around 10, cereal around 12, potatoes around 2(this is the only veg he tolarates), jarred purity around 5 and cereal in the evening. he drinks his formula the whole day.

what is the ideal weight of a 9 month old. im have given up taking him to a paed after every weighing because all she ever says is that i must feed him more and that there''s nothing medically wrong with the baby. my baby looks and behaves likes a healthy and happy baby

The average weight for a baby boy of 9 months is 9.5kg. Your baby's weight is certainly low for his age and falls in the lowest 10% for babies of his age. But you say he is happy and healthy and eats well. I think that he had a reflux problem before which held him back as far as his weight gain was concerned. Now that he is no longer refluxing he should start to pick up weight better. There does not appear to be any need for concern.

Hi Punkee,

Change Doctor/Nurse. I think this is an excellent weight and he sure has a good appetite. My 10 month old weighs almost 10kg and seems happy and healthy.

I don''t think you should worry. Good luck.
