Q.

Underweight 3 yr old?

Hi

My son is almost 3 and half years old. He is about 99cm and weighs 13kg. He has picked up 2 kg in the past year. He looks very skiny. He eats ok...somedays he is a bit fussy but eats even its a little. he prefers protein, loves his fruit and some veggies. He does eat carbs too. He has about two to three stools a day. He has been healthy besides a few colds. However these past two months he has had at least three episodes of stomach flu- it lasts only for one day with vomitting and fever and dissapears. It has never happened before. He also complains of tummy cramps esp in the morning.

Is he underweight for his age and could something be wrong that he is ill. He is at home and doesnt really mix much with others too.

Thanks

Your son is tall for his age.His height is well above the average for a 3 year old boy. His weight is below the average for his age which is 14.5kg at 3 years. It is possible that he is simply folllowing a family pattern as reagards his build with a tendency towards being tall and slim. His recent tummy infections are unusual in a boy who is at home and who does not mix much with other children. It may be worthwhile giving him a medicine to get rid of any possible worms such as Vermox syrup.Otherwise he does not appear to be ill.
