Q.

Umbilical Hernia

Dear Doc
2 weeks ago we adopted a 31/2 month baby boy. He has a smallish umbilical hernia. Is there anything we can do about it? Can we have it removed - and at what age? Thank you!!

There is no need to be concerned about your baby's umbilical hernia. Umbilical hernias are very common and most will close up by themselves. If your son's hernia is still there when he is 4 years old, which is very unlikely, then he should be seen by a paediatric surgeon.
