Q.

Tummy Worries

Hi Dr
I hope you can advise or put my mind at ease. My baby boy, 11 months has had an upset tummy for just over a week now and I do not know what could be causing it. I would not say it is diarrhia as it is not all day. He has been having about three really runny nappies a day where he normally has one firm nappy a day. His diet has not changed and he is eating and drinking his milk as usual so I don' t think there is any risk of dehydration. Also, no vomitting or any other signs of illness. The only thing worrying him at the moment is his teeth and both granny' s seem to think it is the teeth causing the upset tummy. At first I thought it might be a bug but I am sure it would have worked its way out his system by now? My concern is that it seems to be going on for too long and I don' t know how long is safe to leave it this way?
Thank you for the advise, it is much appreciated!

This is a rather difficult question. Your son seems to be quite well except for teething, yet he is having loose stools. Theses stools are not very frequent and fortunately he is not vomiting. His loose stools are unlikely to be due to teething or even an infection in his case. Have you been giving him any fruit juices lately? Stop all fruit juices and all fruit except for apple or pear and see if he improves.
