Q.

Tummy pains and sleepless nights

Hi there,
My 18 month old daughter sleeps very badly at night. She always has. But i have noticed that roughly 6-8 hours after her evening meal, she is very restless. She normally has supper between 5 &  6pm. From about 11pm until about 2 she willl wake up and cry a couple of times. Then she will sleep right through until about 6-30am. Is this a co-incidence? Could it be growing pains? She has all her teeth, so its not teething problems. And she oftentimes sleeps on her tummy, with her legs curled under her in the foetal position. Thank you.

It is difficult to be sure about your daughter's problem, without being able to examine her.Her symptoms are not commonly encountered in children of her age. This is not due to growing pains. If she attends a play school and plays in a sand pit it is possible that she may have picked up a parasite called giardia which inhabits the duodenum and can cause abdominal pain in young children. A stool sample should be examined for this parasite-your paediatrician can arrange for this to be done.
