Q.

Tummy Pain

Hi Doc
My son is 5 months old. He was a colic baby and has outgrown it. However last night was a nightmare. He screamed in agony and pain for several hours. His tummy was hard and his knees were coming up. He was also farting alot. He refused to be put down and slept upright while I carried him.
I massaged him, gave him calpol for pain, gave him a bit of olive oil in case of constipation however none of this helped. He slept away out of tiredness. He refused a bottle and my breast which normally calms him down.

What can you advise I do in this case?

It is difficult to be certain as to what is causing your baby's abdominal discomfort. As he was passing a lot of wind it may be a sign that he is developing a food intolerance such as lactose intolerance. If he is on solids he may have some other food intolerance especially wheat intolerance. If the problem persists it would be best to see your paediatrician.

My baby had the same simptoms when she was about 5 weeks old and we found out she was lactose intolerant, so her pediatrician precribed Reuteri drops (5 drops, once a day) and it really helped. I had to put my baby on Nan Lactose Free untill she outgrew it at about 5 months....
Good Luck...
