Hope that you are well. My son is 3 yrs 7 mths and is on treatment for Chronic Kidney disease from the age of 3mths. due to his condition he has had to endure several hospital admissions and rigourous renal work-up annually. He seems to have a fear of people, I''m unable to take him out to functions, certain shopping malls, for his check-ups etc as he throws an epic tantrum which results in in us leaving any place immediately - he also is not talking yet but is able to pronounce approx. 15 words, knows his colours, alphabet and numbers from 1- 10. I personally believe it is through all the trauma of his hospital admissions,I know the ideal thing to do is to get him assessed by a speech therapist and probably a child psychologist as well but this will be highly impossible due to his fear of hospitals and other places. We have tried taking along toys he likes, inviting his cousin along with him when we go out but this does not work at all . It has really become quite frustrating. Do you advise that i should just wait until he outgrows this stage? (He is also hypertensive, so if i continue to ignore his crying it could result in an elevated bp). Thanking you in advance for your advice.

Your son appears to be showing signs of a well recognised psychological disorder known as agoraphobia. He is still very young to have this problem, but he demonstrates many of the features of this situation. It is difficult to know where to start in order to help him. His years of hospital treatment and doctor visits have taken their toll on him.It may be best to start off taking him to see a paediatric developmental expert. This paediatrician will almost certainly be someone with a great deal of patience and expertise and will know how to deal with his behaviour. From here you should be advised about the next step along the road to helping your son.
