If your son only has one episode of tonsillitis per year he is not a candidate to have a tonsillectomy now. In many cases when children are already this age the number of attacks of tonsillitis become less and less as the years pass, but in others the problem stays the same or worsens. So it is not really possible to say what will happen with your son's tonsils and infection.
