Tonsilectomy in 3 yr old

Hi there. I wanted to find out if u are aware of the following... My son had his tonsils and adenoids removed on fri, on sun he vomitted up a piece of blood soaked gauze - 12cm long. He was in terr pain and could hardly talk - after it cam out he was much better. Is this the norm, as I was horrified. Thanks.

This piece of guaze is probably one of the throat packs used when the tonsils are removed. This swab should have been removed before your son came out of the operating theatre. This appears to have been a serious and dangerous omission on the part of the hospital. Please inform the ENT surgeon immediately.

Hi Worried Mum,

It still does not sound right and I agree with you, he is covering up his tracks. Repost the question to the Prof and read what he says.

Hi there. Thx for the response. We went to the doc yesterday, and according to him he had to stitch the gauze to where the tonsils came out as it wouldn''t stop bleeding. He said that it was dissolvable and that he would swallow it. He apologised for not informing us.Now I don''t know whether to believe him or not, or if he is covering his tracks. Do u perhaps know if this would be true. I am still worried. This was at a private hosptial.

Hi Mum,

I really don''t think this is normal. My son had the same operation and did not have this problem. Did you keep the gauze? I think you should show it to the doctor if you did and kick up a big fuss. Was it a government hospital?
