Q.

toddlers and talking

Hi Doc, i am worried about my twins (2.6 years), they talk but not as they should i think. they can say things like, pee if they want to go to toilet, or pour me some juice or mama uyangishaya (i.e. she is hitting me) My friends kids who are the same age as them, tell me that their kids talk properly. Another concern they say Mama to almost everyone, even men, they started creche in January, they also call their teacher mama or sometimes they say mama to other kids. I am really concerned i though at 2.6 years they will be talking propery. I gave birth to them at 7 months, could that be the reason? please Doc and other parents your opinions appreciated.

This is very common. Your twins appear to be hearing normally because they can say a few words. Their premature birth may account for some part of the delay in their talking.Give them another 5 months and if they are not talking by then they should be seen by a speech therapist.

i also say you dont need to worry now. Speech therapists usually only do assessments after the age of 3 anyway. My son was very delayed in his speech but has caught up very nicely.

Ive learnt that kids develop differently to other kids especially premature babies. My sone was like that but his vocab improved tremendously when he was 3 yrs 2 moths, I honestly think you should worry about that.
