Toddler Runny Tummy

Hi dr
My son (2.5) has had issues with his tummy on and off for a while now. About a month ago I eventually took him at the GP with a runny tummy after trying various home remedies. He was given Smecta and a probiotic, as well as no diary for 3 days, which eventually cleared the tummy. But for the past couple of days, he has had 3 big stools per day again. They’ re not all runny, but I’ m concerned about the amount of stools he has (it usually starts like this and eventually will only be runny). Surely he will lose weight if he has so many stools (he currently weighs around 12kg). He eats well, but if you look at the size of the stools, it’ s almost like ‘ what goes in, comes out again’ . At least one of the stools per day is very runny and I suspect also has a bit of acid in, because he gets quite a bad nappy rash from it. Should I be worried and if so, please advise how I can treat my son for this recurring problem or what the next step would be? I’ m not too keen on constantly giving him Imodium since that won’ t cure an underlying cause?
Thank you for all the good advise.

You are welcome. The most likely cause of your son's diarrhoea is what is known as 'toddler's diarrhoea' One of the most common causes of this condition is a reaction to too much fruit and fruit juice in the diet.It is really a reaction to the natural sugar called fructose which is found in fruit.Stop all fruit and fruit juices in his diet for at least 2 weeks and give him rooibos instead of the fruit and fruit juice in his diet. Stop the probiotics as well as this may be aggravating his diarrhoea now.
