Toddler Circumsision

My son is 17 months old
I have been advised to have him circumsided

It is not for a religious reason.
As I am a single Mother, my advise comes from
my Father.
He advises that it will be beneficial for him( the toddler)
and that as a man, he will indirectly " thank me"  in the long run

I would like to know if it is indeed beneficial for him and what the implications would be as he is not an infant.
Will he hate me and subconsiously know what i am doing to him.
I do not want to, in any way, hurt my child or do something to him that will negatively affect his life forever !

Thanking you

Circumcisions are only performed for definite medical reasons. There is no reason for your son to be circumcised.

Didn''t you see the article in last week''s Huisgenoot (08.03.2010) about the little boy who''s lost 1/2 of his penis due to a blotched circumsision? Yes, it was at a state hospital but why even take the chance that something might go wrong?

Listen to your inner voice. What you ''feel'' to be true is correct. You should protect and nurture your son, and not subject him to unnecessary hurt or harm.
His foreskin was placed on his body to perform a specific function. It is there for a reason and, unless it threatens his life, should be left where it was placed.
You son may not thank you should you decide this for him - I did not thank my parents for taking away my foreskin - as there was no need, and it is my body after all. Only you son can and should make this decision for himself when he reaches the age of majority.
