Thumb-sucker

Hi doc. My son is six months old. What' s concerning me is that he is a thumb-sucker. I' m afraid that he might just carry on with this habit till he' s quite old since I' ve heard so many stories from other people. How do I get him to stop? He' s generally quite a good baby &  I don' t want to upset him too much since he' s teething as well. Please help!!!

Thumbsucking is a natural and comforting thing for babies. It is actually a matter for debate as to whether you should even try and stop your baby sucking his thumb and having to use a dummy in its place. This is a very difficult habit to stop in any case but most babies stop sucking their thumbs when they are toddlers. At present your baby is probably teething and thumbsucking is very comforting for him.
