Childhood Diseases

My maid' s sister is in hospital with TB and the two have been in close contact. My maid is coughing a lot. I am worried as she looks after my two children aged 3 years and 5 months and they are also coughing.

Should I be worried?
What symptoms should I look out for?
If I send my maid for a test, what does it involve?

Your maid should definitely be tested for TB. This involves having a chest XRay. She can be tested at your local clinic. Both of your children have been immunised against TB at birth but you still need to be careful. Signs of TB in children are persistent cough, night sweats and weight loss. If you are concerned about your children especially your 3 year old it would be best to ask your paediatrician to test him/her. This is done with a special skin test.
