?tantrum or abnormal

Doctor. My son is 16 months old. What concerns me is that from December 2009 he has the tendency to cry so hard that he actually stops breathing (that is how it feels to me), turns blue around the mouth and goes limp. This happens when not to frequent but it scares the heck out of people. In December i found out that his nanny was psychotic and I think she terrorised him as he was only weighing 8kg. Now my question: should i be worried? My next appointment at his paediatrician is in June. Thank you. Marna

Your son is having typical breath holding attacks.Breath holding usually occurs in children of this age and may follow a sudden fright or when your son is frustrated and cannot get his own way. He will always start breathing again by himself but it often helps to gently blow onto his face. This problem is a temporary one and your son will grow out of this stage.
