Swollen Face / cheeks

Hi Dr
My 14 month old is on his last day of atibiotics for tonsillitis (5 set in 7 weeks). I think he may be teething as well and he is rather grumpy / ratty / irritable.

He woke up on Sunday morning with swollen, red cheeks and running a bit of a temp on and off the whole day. We havent been out in the weather that the cheeks could be chapped etc. He is graoning and moaning in his sleep and is very restless and I am not sure whether this could be a complication on the tonsillitis or whether the cheeks are just swollen from teething.

I cannot see any rash in his mouth, he is not keen to eat or drink anything but is VERY miserable.

I did think that perhaps he has mumps but the swelling is more in the cheeks and is not the actual neck.

Is it just teething? He is having the tonsils out on 13 Jan but was just concerned it might be something more. I have been giving him panado and some andolex for the teething (in case).

Anything else i can do? Thanks for your help.

I am concerned about your baby's symptoms. There are several possibilities here. He may be allergic to the antibiotic he is on. Another possible cause is an illness called Kawasaki's Disease or he may be developing a condition called Herpes stomatitis. It is essential for your son to be seen by a paediatrician ASAP. Please let me know about the diagnosis once you have seen the paediatrician.
