sun allergy?

Dr, my son, aged 3yr, got a terrible rash after being exposed to the sun last weekend, but it was very hot! I thought it could be that he was allergic to the tan lotion? It was a fragrance free lotion...Can a child be allergic to the sun? Or would it be more likely to be the tan lotion? It wasn''t a normal heat rash, it looked like big red, swolen hives! My son has blond hair and blue eyes, with light skin..he had atopic eczema in the past....

This does sound like what is known as a photosensitivity reaction. The problem is that sometimes a suntan lotion can cause the same kind of reaction. As it is important to know what is the cause of your son's reaction it would be worthwhile consulting either a paediatric allergist or a dermatologist. In SA there is also a high incidence of a genetic illness called porphyria which can also start off with a photosensitivity reaction.
