Sudden night wakefulness

Dear Prof

Another question - my 8 month old son has started waking up a few nights a week between 02h00 and 03h00 and is awake then for at least and hour. He also then has a bowelmovement. I keep the lights switched off and try and sooth and calm him to get him to sleep, but he is so happy chappy and wants to crawl and climb and chatter? Why is this happening??

t is difficult to be certain about the reason for your baby son waking up like this, but it has the potential to become a wonderful source of late night entertainment for him. When he wakes up you appear and he has a great time playing and having a baby talk session. He does not seem to be hungry so that is probably not the reason. It is going to be difficult to break the habit now but it may be an idea to offer him a bottle of Novalac SD formula at bedtime to see if this will help him to sleep through.

Nini, that would be my guess too. He is pulling up and trying to start cruising. Mission man!

If it''s not for any medical reason or teething, which I am sure the doc will be able to advice, then my guess is he''s learnt something new, and wants to practice doing it. He doesn''t understand the difference between night time and day time when it comes to play time - Perhaps he has recently learnt a new word, or see that his talking gets you talking back to him, or he''s recently started crawling, or pushing himself up against things..
