Q.

Stress

Dear Prof

I was with my 3 yrs old son when I discovered that our car was stolen last week Friday. We went through the process of reporting to the police and taking of statement together. Since Friday he is not sleeping well. He can sleep for 2 / 3 hours and then wake up till the morning. He is playing and eating well. We are using a courtesy car @ the moment. Can he be stressed? How can I handle him? Thank you

This is a very stressful and unsettling situation for the whole family. It has been a very traumatic experience for your son. Sleep disturbance is a common result of this kind of stress in everyone and your son certainly has this problem now. He needs lots of reassurance that all will come right again. He needs a very peaceful environment at bedtime. It will help to read to him when he goes to bed. Lie next to him for a while until he falls asleep. If he wakes up go to him, reassure him and then go back to bed. Hopefully this stage will not take too long to pass.
