Q.

stomach pain

Dr my son is 2.5yr old. He keeps on complaining of stomach ache....He has been to Pead, had antibiotics, for incase..(Later stool and urine tests were neg).Had Mycostatin for a week, still he has stomach ache..He was examined by pead who is not worried that there might be any physiological abnormallities...He was negative on RAST one year ago...Can this pain be from food? Do I need to get him examined further? He is already drinking rice milk....If you think that it could be food intollerense, what is the most obvious ones I need to cut out? I don''t want to just take away every thing....?
Thanx

Your son is not allergic and probably would have shown up a food intolerance earlier. All the tests are negative and the doctor's examination of his abdomen is normal. His abdominal pain sounds like a condition called periodic abdominal pain or sometimes just periodic syndrome. This may be related to migraine if you have a family history of migraine. Treatment is difficult but children usually grow out of this syndrome. Increase his fibre intake, keep him off lactose containing dairy foods and give him a probiotic daily. He should NOT eat ripe bananas, hard yellow cheese, marmite and chocolate.
