Still coughing despite Allecet Singulair

Dear Prof

I posted a question regarding my 18 mo son''s cough on 5 March. At that stage it sounded like bronchiolitis, and about a week alter I took him to his paed as it wasn''t improving. At that time (10 days ago) he heard some secretions and wheezes, and had him start on Allecet, with Singulair added if it didn''t improve in about 5 days. Well, it didn''t improve much, so he started on Singulair chew tabs 5 days ago. Still no improvement though and sleeping poorly with a very poor appetite. He is happy otherwise, active and full of beans. I tried giving him Nurofen before bed as he is still cutting his lower molars, but that made no difference. What is your take on this?

The most likely cause of your son's cough is a post-viral wheeze. This can take 3 to 4 weeks or longer to clear. Allecet is for nasal allergy and will not help your son's cough. Singulair may help a bit, but works best as an asthma treatment. He probably needs a brochodilator such as Ventolin preferably given using a spacer with a face mask and used at least twice daily.
