Still coughing

Hi Professor,

My 2 year old is still coughing, this is now going into the third week. In the first week I gave him Prospan for 5 days, stopping for the weekend. This did not work, so I gave him Flemeze for 5 days, again stopping for the weekend. This week I started him on Deselex 2.5ml daily and he is still coughing. I am loathe to take him to the clinic as they just put him on anti-biotics.

His 4 year old brother brings home germs from creche and the 2 year old constantly seems to have mucous. He is eating and sleeping well and has no temperature.

Is there anything else I can do?

It is possible that your younger son has a form of whooping cough. There is a lot of whooping cough going around this winter. It is typical of whooping coiugh that medicines do not help at all. As your older son is at a creche it is very likely that he brought this ilneess home.He does not need an antibiotic and it is now too late to use the medicines which sometimes help if given right at the start of the illness. You can try giving your son Aterax syrup 2.5ml at night and see if this helps his cough. You may need a prescription for the Aterax so first ask your pharmacist. Sometimes this cough can carry on for 3 months.
