Q.

Steven-Johnson syndrome

Hi there

I hope you can help me, we took our 20 month daughter to the GP this morning, she has blister like marks on her hands and feet and bum, the blisters also spread to the inside of her mouth. The GP said she''s got steven-johnson syndrome and gave some medication. I researched it on google and came across some info that says it is life threatening, the GP however said it is not dangerous and if we left it untreated it should disappear by itself. To make matters worse I am 16 weeks pregnant he also said that it won''t harm me or our unborn child... but now after reading this info I''m scared that the GP might be wrong. What should I do?
Please help.

Thanks
Alfreda

This does sound like the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome which is usually a very severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic or other medicine. It must be taken very seriously as it may be life threatening. If it is the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome then it is not infectious so you do not need to worry about any harm to you or your unborn child. There are other conditions that can also cause blistering of the skin like this especially an infection of the skin called the 'scalded skin syndrome'. Your little daughter should be taken to an emergency paediatric department immediately.

My son just had Coxsakie A hand foot and mouth - the symtoms sound the same, he also had fever- contagious but not dangerous - but internet told me not to have him around pregnant women - so go get a second opinion in case it is steven Johnson.

Sounds like hand, foot and mouth. It is very contagious but not harmful. However, I don''t know what the effects are on a pregnant mother. Best check with your gynae.

please make sure that your daughter doesn''t have coxsackie virus (hand, foot and mouth disease). there is currently an outbreak, especially in the western cape. symptoms are fever, blisters inside the mouth and throat, etc best of luck.
