Starting Solids

Hi Doc,

My twin boys were born at 30 weeks at the end of December. They are now 7mths - chronological age. I have started them on some Purity rice cereal. Just a teaspoon. They have 175ml of milk at each feed &  sometimes even less. They probably have around 4 to 5 bottles. They now sleep through the night. Have their last bottle around 5:30pm. They fall asleep between 6 &  7pm &  sleep through the night. We try to feed them at around 3am. They usually drink less than 100ml at this time.

Are we underfeeding them? SHould we wake them up at night for a feed?

Birth weights were 1.4kg &  1.6kg. They now weigh just over 6kg.

Your babies were born 10 weeks prematurely. They are now 30 weeks old but only 20 weeks in terms of their maturity. The average weight for a baby boy of 20 weeks is 7.3kg.It does look as if your baby boys are lagging behind in terms of their expected weight, but they sleep very well and appear to be content and not hungry. For this reason it does not appear to be a good idea to wake them uo one more time at night. In any case they will be sleepy and won't take much formula Rather introduce more solids into their diets.Your boys will eventually catch up with their weight gain.
