Split skin

Hello Doc!
It is really so nice to have somewhere to come with all my questiona!! Really appreciate your time and knowledge!!

My question now is:
My 19 month old baby has a sore underneath is big toe.
Basically in the fold, but it looks like it burst open!

My husband says he also had this as a kid and it is some sort of infection or fungus....
My nephew on my husband side also has issues with his feet....

Do you have any suggestions?
Can this actually be caused be something genetic?

Thank you so much!!!!

Thank you. This sounds like the start of a condition seen in children especially during the summer months called 'juvenile plantar dermatosis' This condition is more common in allergic children and appears to be related to eczema, but can also occur in children who are not allergic. It is thought that friction is the main cause of the cracking of the toes. It usually clears up by itself with time. Vaseline jelly is probably the best treatment. You can read more about this skin condition and get more advice on this site:

My daughter had the exact same problem, but in winter! I tried different ointments &  eventually found that Repair cream made a difference. Takes a LONG time to heal though.
