Sore stomach

My daughter is 9 and has been complaining of a sore stomach (in the centre just under the ribs/sternum) for about 4 weeks now. She is not vomiting, does not have diarrhea and has no fever.

At first I thought it was due to not wanting to go to school but the pain remains over weekends and when playing with friends. She ends up in tears a few times a day because of the pain.

I took her to our GP who checked her out. He checked and her stools are soft, there is no constipation. He then sent her for a sonar. Nothing other than a few swolen lymph glands were found in the groin area. Our GP said that it is then most probably an upper respiratory tract infection (no cough or runny nose etc) and that she should take ponstel 3 times a day for a few days and it will clear up on it' s own. She has been taking the ponstel for almost a week now and still complains about her stomach.

Please can you tell me what could be causing the pain and what my next step should be. Many thanks.

The fact that your daugheter has symptoms over weekends as well is significant. Also that her symptoms have gone on so long. She may have a stomach ulcer as the site of her pain suggests this possibility. This will not show up on an ultrasound. She needs to be seen by a paediatric gastroenterologist.
