Sore neck

Hi Doc,
My son (2) got up at 3 yesterday morning with a sore neck. I checked him thoruoghly for any bumps and bruises on his head and body, and there was nothing. I checked with the school and they said he did not hurt himself during the day previous. I did feel a small lump around the area where glands normally swell
when we are sick. I rubbed Arnica oil on his neck. In the afternoon I checked again, and it seemed like there was a lot more lumps, but smaller. I rubbed Arnica again. He slept well last night, but was sore again this morning, but not worse.
He is eating well, and still happy when he forgets the pain.
He' s now realised if he holds his head at a certain angle, the pain is not so bad, so he' s walking around like someone with a stiff neck.
Could it be that he slept in an awkward position and sprained his neck, or should I be more concerned, esp about the lumps?
Many thanks.

It is possible that your son has sprained his neck, but I am always concerned about a child who complains about neck pain. He appears to be happy when the pain does not worry him too much but it would still be best for him to be checked by his doctor.
