Son''s Vision

My son is now 4years old and was a premmie at birth (28 weeks). We have noticed that in the last 3 weeks or so that he is blinking excessively (he also narrows the eyes contantly as if he is trying to look at something in the distance) When he was released from hospital once he reached 2kg''s, we did take him to a opthamologist and there was absolutely nothing wrong with his eyes.

I can only get an appointment with the opthamologist in 4 week''s time - does it sound like it could be shortsightedness or could there be problems with his retina? (I believe this is a common problem with premmies)
Why are these symptoms only now appearing at 4 years? We were not told we had to have his eyes tested every year.

There may be no problem with your son's eyesight at all.He has only started with these symptoms recently and if he had a serious eye problem due to prematurity this would have become obvious much earlier. He may have an allergic eye problem which is called allergic conjunctivitis. Another common cause of his present symptoms is an eyelash which has turned inwards and is irritating his eye when he blinks.
