Son aged 7

Hi doc, my son aged 7 is now in grade 1. However, his teacher feels that we need to hold him back for one year as he struggles with reading and phonics. His maths is good.
We took him to a childrens optometrist and they fitted him with lenses as there was a small co ordination problem. HOwever, he is able to read without them and is better with his work on some days and others he just lacks badly. He wears the glasses everyday, but still gets the phonics, etc wrong. He pronounces with a lisp too. I took him to an audiologist and there is nothing wrong with hearing. the next step is a speech therapist. however, i cannot help but feel that it is emotional as he understands instructions, follows them to the tee, is obedient, but lazy when it comes to schoolwork. Not sure what to make of him. His sisters excel at school.

Your son's problem is very common except for the fact that he does well at maths. He does not seem to need the glasses he has been given. He seems to have a dyslexia problem. It would probably be best to have him assessed by an educational psychologist first.
