Q.

Smelly breath in toddlers

Hi doctor
My 2 and a half year old has a very odd smell to her breath and even from her ears. I have checked her teeth for decay and do not see any , and have started being more forceful with insisting she brush her teeth twice a day. I have asked her if her throat is sore , which she says no. She does not have a runny nose or any other symptoms. What could be the cause?

As you are aware, it is unusual for a young child to have bad breath. There must be a reason for this. Often mouth breathing is the main reason possibly due to a blocked nose. You say that your daughter does not have a runny nose and her teeth are fine. The most likely cause for her would probably be tonsil infection. Please ask your doctor see her.
