Smelling armpits - at 4

Hi Dr,

My 4 year old daughter has recently developed smelling armpits, but I can only smell when I come close to her, like when bathing her. She also has ezcema , could these be related. I am really worried. She is a twin and her twin does not have any of these. How can I help her. Please advise!

It is unusual for a young girl of 4 years to have any body odour. As this may be the first sign of early puberty it is very important that your daughter is seen by her paediatrician. Obviously she is too young to be entering puberty already and she may have a condition called 'precocious puberty'.

i had that with my daughter as well and it can be very disturbing but i have since learnt that it could have been the bottles i used when she was small which were not BPA free, she started using roll on at 7. I also have a friend who was complaining of the same thing so you are not alone.
